(CNN) - Flamingos gathered on an Aruba beach, wild horses wandering in Utah and orangutans receiving treatment in a quarantine center in Indonesia are part of the winning images in the Best Travel Photographer of the Year 2019 awards.

With an international jury of image experts, including the Pulitzer Essdras M. Suarez prize winner, the annual competition receives proposals from amateur, semi-professional and professional photographers from over 140 countries.

It is divided into multiple categories, including four sections of portfolios: The art of traveling, Planet in danger, People and cultures and Emotions and adventures.

Katy Gómez Catalina, from Spain, was named the main winner of the competition due to a magnificent portfolio with images of the Batwa pygmy tribe on Lake Mutanda, Uganda, as well as by an intriguing photograph of the Louvre Museum in Paris for a day rainy.

“I observe the world, not only to witness what I see, but (…) to express a personal perspective, a point of view, an interpretation and not just a representation,” says Katy Gómez Catalina.

"The camera has become an inseparable companion, I cannot see the world if it is not through the eyes of a camera," he added.

Alain Schroeder, a Belgian graphic reporter, took home the Planet in Danger award with his orangutan images, while wildlife photographer Will Burrard-Lucas and amateur photographer Sumi Duha were the two winners in the Nightfall category at dawn.

The Best Travel Photographer of the Year awards also include a special award for young photographers: Indigo Larmour, from Ireland and with just 11 years old, was the main winner of this category.

"Being a child means that I usually see everyday activities from a different perspective," said Larmour. “When I grow up, I would love to be a photographer and highlight environmental problems and tell stories of people I know through photos,” he added.

Robin Yong, award-winning travel and commercial photographer, won with his image of a man and a woman in the streets of Old Havana, in Cuba, the prize in the category of Street Life and in the Election of the public, which was voted online.

Other categories included an award for images taken with a cell phone or tablet, awarded to American photographer Benjamin Shaul for his image of flamingos in Aruba, which he captured with an iPhone. A new category was also released for documentary photos of travel-related topics: TAPSA, by Kiran Ridley, won the award.

The awards included Fujifilm XT-3 cameras, a sailing expedition in Norway and a 10-day trip to Sharjah and the Xposure of Photography festival.

The competition is open to anyone over 19, except for those who are directly involved in the execution of the competition or belong to the panel of judges. The Young Photographer of the Year category is aimed at people 18 years of age or younger. All applications are sent online on the website www.tpoty.com.
