Does Facebook check political ads? Zuckerberg explains 2:12

(CNN Business) - Mark Zuckerberg says that Facebook will defend principles such as free expression and encryption, even if that means facing an adverse reaction.

“This is the new approach, and I think it will bother a lot of people. But frankly, the old approach was also bothering a lot of people, so let's try something different, ”said Zuckerberg at the Silicon Slopes Tech summit in Utah on Friday.

The co-founder and CEO of Facebook said that the goal of his company for a long time was to do nothing that was considered "too offensive," but now he is changing that approach against what he considers excessive censorship.

"We are increasingly being called to censor many different types of content that make me feel really uncomfortable," said Zuckerberg, while acknowledging Facebook's responsibility to purge its content platforms related to terrorism, child exploitation and incitement to violence.

"We are going to remove content that is really harmful, but the line must be maintained at some point," he added.

Zuckerberg also said that Facebook would continue to fight for encryption, another position that has generated controversy in recent months.

The company has been criticized for allowing politicians to lie in the ads, at a time when Twitter decided to ban political advertising altogether.

Zuckerberg has increasingly expressed his opinion about Facebook's determination to maintain its positions even when they prove to be unpopular. His comments in Utah came days after he said in the company's latest earnings announcement that his goal for the next decade "is not to be liked, but to be understood."

The 35-year-old technology billionaire reiterated that sentiment on Friday.

"If you're not out there defending the things that people care about, then it's not possible for people to feel so much what you're doing," he said.
