Berlin - The Thuringian scandal surrounding the FDP prime minister Thomas Kemmerich also has serious consequences on the executive level of the federal CDU : party leader Annegret Kramp - Karrenbauer announced her resignation as CDU leader on Monday. After the Thuringia scandal, only 15 percent of Germans thought AKK was the right choice as CDU chairman . This was the result of a survey carried out by the Kantar polling institute on behalf of Bild am Sonntag . A total of 72 percent therefore believed AKK to be a wrong appointment. For comparison: Despite the criticism of Christian Lindner, 34 percent still thought he was the right person to head the FDP - 38 percent saw him as the wrong person.
CDU is looking for AKK successor: current survey sees clear winner
After Kramp-Karrenbauer's announcement of giving up the party chairmanship in December, there is of course also the question of a successor as CDU leader or head. This search has become even more important because AKK expressly advocated reuniting the office of party leader and the election of the candidate for chancellor in one person.
Three names in particular are currently mentioned in connection with a successor to the AKK at the top of the CDU: On the one hand Friedrich Merz and Jens Spahn , both of whom once lost to the AKK party leadership. On the other hand, NRW Prime Minister Armin Laschet is repeatedly mentioned as a possible candidate.
In the current Kantar poll, Friedrich Merz is currently in the lead in favor of voters: 33 percent see him as the right person to head the CDU . Laschet follows behind with 20 percentage points. Spahn only comes third in this survey (18 percent).
"The CDU leader Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer is returning an office that she never really owned," said Georg Anastasiadis, editor-in-chief of Munich's Mercury *, in a comment on the AKK's resignation.
