What did the Oscar winners say? 2:09

(CNN) - The “In Memoriam” segment of the Sunday Academy Awards caused some spectators pain.

Some questioned why Luke Perry, Cameron Boyce, Tim Conway, Michael J. Pollard, Peggy Lipton and others were not included in the annual tribute to the members of the film community who have died.

Perry's exclusion was a particularly painful point for some since he appeared in the Oscar-nominated film, "Once Upon a time ... in Hollywood."

The star of "Beverly Hills, 90210" died last March, after a stroke. He was 52 years old.

Not for nothing, but yesterday the Academy forgot to put the name of Luke Perry and Cameron Boyce in commemoration of the people who died in the last year

Sid Haig was an absolute legend. A wonderful actor and a beautiful human being.

For him to be blatantly ignored by 'The Academy' for their In Memoriam section is an absolute disgrace.

In the approximately three minute segment of Sunday, Billie Eilish performed "Yesterday" of the Beatles while displaying images of 59 deceased artists.

Former NBA star and 2018 Oscar winner Kobe Bryant, who died two weeks ago in a helicopter accident with his daughter and seven other people, was honored, as was actor Kirk Douglas, who died days before the ceremony.

Perry and more than 100 others are included in the Oscar In Memoriam section of the organization's website. The televised tribute generally presents a variety of members from the 17 branches of the Academy and previous Oscar winners.

The Academy offered an explanation in a statement to CNN, saying "it receives hundreds of requests to include loved ones and industry colleagues in the Oscar In Memoriam segment."

"An executive committee representing each branch considers the list and makes selections for transmission based on limited available time," the statement said. “All the presentations are included in Oscar.com and will remain on the site throughout the year. Luke Perry and Cameron Boyce are remembered in the Oscar.com gallery. ”

This is not the first year that the Academy Awards face questions about the segment.

Last year there were complaints after actress Carol Channing, the director of "Singin 'in the Rain" Stanley Donen and others were not included in the televised tribute.
