The Oscar 2020 ceremony, in which the South Korean film "Parasite" won the Best Film award, had the smallest audience since registration , the US specialized media Variety reported Monday.

According to that news portal dedicated to the audiovisual industry, 23.6 million viewers tuned in last night to see the gala that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences organized at the Dolby Theater.

That number means 20% less than last year , when the gala debuted without a master of ceremonies, in an attempt to shorten its duration before the decline in public that was suffering.

That year, the audience had an increase of 12% compared to 2018, which so far had been the least seen on television.

The news of the minimums in both metrics is not entirely surprising, Variety explained, as the numbers of the awards in general have declined in recent years.

As an example, the 2020 Golden Globes fell 2% compared to 2019, while the 2019 Emmys were the least seen in history.

However, the 2020 Oscars are still the most watched awards broadcast of the season, beating the Grammys by just under 5 million viewers and the Balloons by 5.3 million.

Last night, "Parasite" made history: not only did it become the first non-English-speaking film to win the highest category, but it also became the winner in Best International Film.

Its director, Bong Joon Ho, also received two Oscars for his work as director and in the Best Screenplay category.
