Lebanon: Government Obtains Parliament's Confidence Despite Street Opposition

2020-02-11T19:19:24.748Z

The Lebanese parliament on Tuesday gave its confidence to the new government hated by the street, ignoring the opposition of hundreds of demonstrators dispersed by the police with tear gas and water cannons.

Having taken to the streets at dawn to prevent deputies from entering parliament in downtown Beirut, the protesters threw eggs and stones at the cars of some parliamentarians and the concrete barricades erected by the forces of security. Wrapped in Lebanese flags and chanting " no confidence ", the demonstrators denounced an " illegitimate " Parliament and a government which according to them does not respond to the aspirations of the protest.

This did not prevent Parliament from placing its trust in the evening vote, following an eight-hour marathon session focused on the " ministerial declaration ", which outlines the government's program . " Congratulations, " said Speaker Nabih Berri, to the applause of MPs, during a session broadcast live on local channels. Of the 84 deputies present, the government obtained 63 favorable votes, twenty against and one parliamentarian abstained. Just before the vote, Prime Minister Hassan Diab had once again assured that his government " adopted the demands of the uprising, which caused an earthquake in the country ". In a country on the brink of economic collapse, the uprising unpublished launched on October 17 calls for the departure of the entire political class, accused of corruption and incompetence.
