The Russian Foreign Ministry affirmed that the reason for the escalation of tension in the Idlib region is due to the "chronic" failure of Turkey to honor its obligations, noting at the same time that the Israeli attacks on Syria are a destabilizing factor.
The Russian website today quoted Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova as saying in a press briefing today that the Turkish regime bears responsibility for the escalation of tension in the Idlib region, explaining that Turkey "does not adhere chronically" to its obligations under the Sochi understandings.
Zakharova added: "We see that the reason for the current deterioration is due to Turkey's chronic failure to fulfill its obligations within the framework of the Sochi Memorandum concluded on the 17th of September 2018 and the transfer of elements loyal to it to the northeast of Syria."
Zakharova stressed that Russia "remains committed to the agreements reached in the framework of the Astana process and is determined to continue the work aimed at its full implementation."
Earlier today, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that the terrorist attacks in Idlib continue despite the Turkish regime's pledge to "neutralize them", which is unacceptable and contrary to the Sochi agreements.
Zakharova said, "The Israeli strikes not only violate the sovereignty of the Syrian state, but also threaten the life and safety of civilians."
