The synod on the Amazon which was held in Rome, last October, had given rise to a curiosity going far beyond the only interest carried to this region of the world plagued by serious difficulties caused by its immensity and the lack of priests.
A point raised by the fathers of the synod already aroused passions: the possibility of ordaining married men: the viri probati . This hypothesis had been favored by the participants who voted for an evolution of the priesthood. Some seemed very interested in this arrangement for the Amazon, intending to import it sooner or later in a Europe plagued by a vocations crisis. Commentators more or less authorized, but still polarized on sexuality and priestly celibacy, already saw in it the entry of modernity through the great gate of Saint-Pierre.
