Munich - The number of reported anti-Semitic crimes in Bavaria has increased significantly in 2019. According to the figures from the Bavarian State Criminal Police Office (LKA), 307 cases were registered in the Free State last year, an increase of around 40 percent compared to the previous year. Almost 300 of these offenses are assigned to the right-wing political spectrum by security authorities.

Anti-Semitism in Bavaria: Spaenle calls for "solidarity towards Jews"

A spokesman for the ministry spoke of a worrying increase that the core concern of Bavarian security policy was "the best possible protection for the Jews living here". Ludwig Spaenle (CSU), state anti-Semitism official, described the increase as "terrifying". With regard to the numbers, "Solidarity towards Jews, prevention of anti-Semitic attitudes and actions and state repression against criminals are now required," said Spaenle, who calls for a "culture of looking". He also referred to new prevention programs that sensitize schools, for example, and should thus nip anti-Semitic thinking in the bud.

Rise in anti-Semitic crimes: security agencies are vigilant

Anti-Jewish crimes are being given high priority by the police, the ministry spokesman said. "We fight anti-Semitic crimes with all legally and actually possible preventive and repressive measures." It is also essential "that as far as possible all anti-Semitic crimes are reported to the police". Ludwig Spaenle emphasized that the security and judicial authorities should intervene immediately and be vigilant if they were anti-Semitic crimes.

The LKA also wants to be more attentive to aspects of hate posting and cybercrime. Now it should also be checked whether so-called hate postings have been increasingly reported. A hate speech officer has recently been set up in Bavaria to deal with the pursuit of hate comments.

The research and information center Antisemitismus Bayern (RIAS Bayern) also collects data on anti-Jewish crimes, the numbers are expected in April.

A rabbi family was attacked anti-Semitically in Munich - the suspect then commented on it.

At the beginning of the year, Markus Söder made the AfD responsible for the increased number of crimes with an anti-Semitic background.

Recently, twelve members of a right-wing terrorist cell were arrested - the breakthrough came in raids in 13 locations in Germany.
