Is there a little sensation coming up? In Bavaria, a route for a Transrapid could still be built - albeit in a reduced form.

  • Years ago, a Transrapid line from Munich city center to the airport was to be built - but the ambitious project failed.
  • A construction company at the airport is now presenting a feasibility study on magnetic levitation trains.,
  • The "Transport System Bögl" (TSB) is designed for local traffic and has a top speed of 150 km / h.

Today, details of a feasibility study on magnetic levitation trains are to be presented at the airport. The federal government commissioned this expertise last year.

The study builds on the experience that the construction group Max Bögl had on the company premises in Sengenthal / Upper Palatinate with a further developed suspension railway on an 800 meter long route. The "Transport System Bögl" (TSB) is designed for local transport and has a top speed of 150 km / h - not 400 km / h like the Transrapid used to do on the (no longer existing) test track in Emsland.

Munich: is a mini transrapid coming for the airport?

According to the text of the invitation to tender, the study should check whether “laws and regulations” such as the General Magnetic Levitation Act need to be changed. It goes on to say: "In a further step, the feasibility study should investigate the area of application of the TSB as an island operation using Munich Airport as an example." The airport was stretched so far that the different functional areas on the site would have to be reconnected. At the same time, the Free State of Bavaria has announced an investigation into whether the route network could also be expanded, for example in the direction of the Dachau or Munich districts.

Apparently, the idea of building a Transrapid route from Munich city center to the airport should not be revived. Bavaria abandoned this plan in 2008 in view of the cost of more than three billion euros.

The Transrapid came to a notoriety after an accident on the test track in Lower Saxony. On September 22, 2006, 23 people were killed and ten others injured. The train, occupied by a group of visitors, had hit a stationary workshop trolley at high speed.
