The “Rettet den Tegernsee” association wants to enforce the desludging of Schwaighof Bay so that it can be used as a bathing beach. Now the protection community Tegernseer Tal opposes it.

Update from February 21, 2:05 p.m .:

The Schutzgemeinschaft Tegernseer Tal (SGT) has positioned itself in the Schwaighof Bay area: it has spoken out in favor of not removing the mud and leaving the lake shore to nature instead. The club then had to put up with some hostility. The accusation: The SGT have no idea of the matter, they are wrongly playing on themselves as experts.

Chairman Angela Brogsitter-Finck therefore sees itself clarified: The protection community has only agreed with the opinion of the Bund Naturschutz and Landesbund for bird protection, because their arguments about Schwaighofbucht "seemed the most plausible and practical", Brogsitter-Finck says clear. "We are not the big experts ourselves," admits the chair.

Original article from February 20th:

Tegernsee - For several years now, the “Save the Tegernsee” association, headed by Andreas Scherzer, has denounced the condition of the Schwaighof Bay. As reported, the association launched a citizens' appeal at the end of January. The question is: "Are you that the city of Tegernsee is doing everything legally permissible so that the sometimes life-threatening silting up of the Schwaighof Bay between the Schwaighofstrasse 2 estate in the north and the mouth of the Rottach in the Tegernsee is eliminated, and swimming in the lake is possible again becomes?"

Protection association for reed rest area

The media response was considerable, which makes Scherzer happy. For the Schutzgemeinschaft Tegernseer Tal (SGT), it was the impetus to also deal with the topic. However, their conclusion is completely different: The SGT clearly opposes the demand to make the muddy bay suitable for bathing. "A small reed rest area would be very good for the lake, which is used extremely for tourism, and would also be beneficial for the waterfowl living there," says the SGT board in the current newsletter to members and friends. Since the end of the ice age, all alpine lakes have naturally been silted up by inflows: "Removing the sludge is tantamount to Sisyphean work." The taxpayers cannot be expected to bear the high costs involved. “Therefore, you should leave the lake shore in the Schwaighof Bay to nature,” demands the SGT. In the face of progressive climate change, this ecological solution is the most sensible and appropriate.

"Clear demarcation" as a security measure

As a safety measure, clear signage should signal: The wet mud bank must not be entered because of the risk of an accident. If necessary, the zone must be clearly demarcated from the land. In addition, the city must not only prohibit the feeding of water birds, but also punish them. “There are plenty of swimming opportunities on Lake Tegernsee. There are only a few calm, natural zones, ”explains the SGT.

In the meantime, the association “Save the Tegernsee” is busy collecting signatures for the request. The chairman Scherzer cannot say yet how many are already together. You will only count after Mardi Gras. However, he has no doubt that in the end the number will be enough for a decision. It is still open whether the association will submit the request before the local elections or only afterwards. "In any case, the new city council has to deal with it," says Scherzer. He is already satisfied with the success of the campaign.

Association "Save the Tegernsee" wants to maintain pressure

It has given impetus to the demand for measures in the Schwaighof Bay. The club wanted to keep the pressure on anyway. The main aim is not the city of Tegernsee, but the Ministry of the Environment as the responsible authority. That has now also announced that possibilities are being examined to reduce the sludge with the use of bacteria. Scherzer is also convinced that dredged sludge does not necessarily have to be disposed of as hazardous waste. He was in contact with a company that had dredged the Berger See near Gelsenkirchen. The company got 30,000 cubic meters of sludge from the lake: "And the farmers drove the sludge onto the fields."
