“Ethical hacking”: an increasingly coveted activity

2020-02-27T18:15:25.138Z

For having detected computer vulnerabilities before malicious actors, hackers registered on the HackerOne platform raised more than 40 million dollars in 2019.

At the mention of the word "hacker", many people imagine an unscrupulous young man, his face hidden under a large hood, frantically strumming on a keyboard, in a completely dark room. This shot could quickly evolve. Indeed, as cyberattacks multiply around the world, a new form of resistance is gradually gaining momentum: the "bug bounty", bug hunting in French. To improve their cybersecurity, more and more companies reward ethical hackers, also called white hackers, when they detect their computer vulnerabilities.

Hacking started in the darkest dark side of the Internet. Now it's a professional vocation

The gains thus collected are sometimes something to dream about. HackerOne, one of the leading global platforms connecting hackers and businesses, said in a statement that seven of its hackers each earned more than $ 1 million in 2019. In total, more than $ 40 million were donated to the 600,000 pirates of the platform, which are twice as numerous as last year. 18% of them would even exercise this profession full time.

" No industry or profession has experienced an evolution comparable to piracy ", assure the leaders of HackerOne. It started in the darkest dark side of the Internet. Later, it became a respectable pastime, something that talented people could do aside. Now it's a professional vocation: hackers are trustworthy and they provide us all with a valuable service . ”

France is also interested in the bug bounty

The Airbus company, the Grand Cognac conurbation, the M6 group ... In France alone, a multitude of companies paid the price of cyberattacks in 2019. " It is difficult to accurately estimate the cost of cybercrime. Victims don't always spot attacks, and when they do, they don't necessarily report the numbers, ”said Nicolas Arpagian, director of strategy at Orange Cyberdefense. Unlike the United States, there are not yet reliable statistics in France. According to the FBI, the amount of American losses caused by cybercrime reached 3.5 billion euros in 2019, against 2.7 in 2018 ". Cybersecurity thus becomes a major issue, and the practice of bug bounty, an increasingly widespread solution. Among HackerOne's customers, we now find prestigious companies, such as Spotify, Twitter, Uber and Nintendo.

If the Americans are undeniably leaders in the sector, France also knows how to take advantage of ethical hackers. Founded in 2013, the YesWeHack platform works with 15,000 hackers, paid between 50 and 20,000 euros. In early 2019, it raised four million euros and in particular established a partnership with the Ministry of the Armed Forces. Its main competitor, Yogosha, won the special jury prize at the 2019 International Cybersecurity Forum (FIC) and raised two million euros just a few weeks ago.
