Ten years after Xynthia, the slow rebirth of La Faute-sur-Mer

REPORT - In February 2010, the ocean, swollen by the storm, ravaged an entire housing estate, killing 29 people. Since then, the village has been trying to raise its head.

In appearance, La Faute-sur-Mer is a seaside resort like the others. A charming Vendée village stretching on a peninsula, whose wild and sandy point gently joins the ocean. But in the daily life of its inhabitants, the storm Xynthia, which had hit the Atlantic coast in 2010, is omnipresent. "Not a day goes by without anyone talking about this drama," admits one of them.

Here, just ten years ago, nature had killed in the middle of the night. Pushed by strong winds, becoming threatening with giant waves, the ocean had raged madly over this village, causing the waters of its river to overflow. Here and there, the dikes had given way or had been spanned by these raging waters, which had ended their race by drowning a housing estate built in a basin of the commune.
