Rosario de la Frontera is an injured town that demands justice. Its inhabitants, united in pain by the tragedy that crosses the Subelza family, sympathized with the parents and brothers of Santino, the 4-year-old boy who was killed in Puerto Deseado and his mother, Maria, raped by two subjects.

On Wednesday, a huge caravan of more than 2,000 people, accompanied the passage of the body of the child that was sent from Puerto Deseado to Salta, by plane and then from the capital of Salta to Rosario de la Frontera by car. The crowd escorted the coffin to the Nuestra Señora del Rosario parish and then to the Choromoro cemetery in Tucumán.

This city with village customs, of 40,000 inhabitants, is still shocked and does not leave its astonishment at the murder of the child and the violation of his mother in Puerto Deseado last week. Santino, despite his 4 years, was already known by many: his father Celso is one of the 4 carpenters of Rosario de la Frontera, like his uncle Eustaquio, and also attended the Early Childhood Center of the parish.

For the pastor of Our Lady of the Rosary, José Jiménez, who officiated the farewell Mass of the child's body, “to this story of Santino and the Subelza family, the people took it as their own. He became innate to their pain and from the first moment marches were organized asking for justice. It's something that shocked all of Argentina. ”

The religious told Clarín that this situation "of so much pain, grievance, abuse and death touches any heart", that is why the participation and accompaniment of the people was very great.

No other circumstance is remembered in which such support or presence of the people has been manifested, say the villagers, the priest and some relatives of Santino. There was not even so much commotion 10 years ago, with a wave of suicides that shook the tranquility of this town in northern Argentina.

“Rosario was news at the provincial and national level for the death of young people and children, so this story of the Subelza family is like a wake-up call. Any father would be touched by such a tragic loss in those circumstances and Rosario became part of this story, ”said Father Jimenez.

In this city of Salta, details the religious who suffers violence, the drug is the great scourge and there is precariousness in some neighborhoods, “but what he has is that everyone knows each other and when everyone knows each other, it's like a family relationship is generated . That is why in the tragedy, everyone becomes supportive in pain for that village mentality. ”

"Why me?"

Celso Subelza, is 45 years old, is short, dark, has a tired look and does not want to talk much. Educated and respectful, he thanks Clarín and TN "for having accompanied us from the first moment." Standing at the door of his brother's carpentry, Eustaquio, Santino's father excuses himself before this newspaper. “I don't want to talk, I apologized, I have my head somewhere else. My wife is very beaten and shocked. ”

“I never imagined that this could happen to me. Why me? I don't hurt anyone, I earn a living on the street, I'm a working man, ”he says with little energy. Since the tragedy occurred, as he describes it, Celso has had his head occupied in Santino. "It was all for us," he says.

"Everyone knows me in the town, I'm a good man, I earn a living honestly, why did I get this?" Celso wonders. The man tells that he had a sacrificed life, that he must go out every day to earn his bread. “I work in a particular way, I have carpentry in my house, but every day I go out to look for jobs. I never had a blank job, ”so, he notes, his life has always been hard work.

He is one of the few carpenters left in Rosario de la Frontera; Since arriving from Santa Victoria Oeste (about 130 kilometers north of the town), his life has been greatly sacrificed. He began working as a young man with his brother Eustace, from whom he learned the carpenter's trade. Then they separated, but their relationship remains very affectionate, very close brothers.

As soon as he arrived from Santa Victoria, he met his wife, María (44) with whom he had 4 children, Daniela (26) who lives in Buenos Aires, David (24), resides in Puerto Deseado and to whom his wife and small child had gone To visit, Franco (22) who is Gendarme and lives in Buenos Aires and Santino. "He (for the youngest) was the only one left, it was all for us," says the man.

He tells that his wife had traveled with Santino this year to Puerto Deseado and he could not go “because there was no (money)” and he remembers that on March 27, 2017, for Holy Week, it was the last time he had been in the South to see your son.

"Let those responsible pay what they did"

"I ask justice to work well, that these people pay for what they did, because otherwise they can continue killing." Eustaquio Subelza is 56 years old, he is the older brother of Celso, Santino's father and cries out for quick justice.

Eustaquio is almost the emotional support of his brother and sister-in-law. It was he who had to contain and attend to Celso, when he learned about the tragedy of Puerto Deseado. “They called me Thursday afternoon, a neighbor, to tell me that it seems that something had happened in Celso's house and that they had taken him to the broken hospital. I thought anything. ”

He went to the hospital and found his brother in shock. “He was screaming disconsolate, I didn't understand anything. There he told me what had happened. ” Eustaquio, then, tried to talk to Celso's eldest daughter, Daniela, who lives in Buenos Aires, to tell her. "Luck that he didn't attend to me because he's pregnant and anything could happen to him."

The following days were "terrible", according to the man. “We had no money to travel south, so Celso went to see the mayor to ask him to collaborate with money for the tickets. There were buts and delays, but as the case came out in the media, they began to move. ”

For man, “it is something difficult to understand. We do not do evil to anyone, perhaps if we were bad people… ”, he says looking for an explanation. “We are an honest family and Celso's family too, why did it happen to us? There are so many people who do wrong. ”

"I hope that justice condemns them, as it has to be, they cannot be free, because they can continue killing, it seems that they do it for fun." In his carpentry workshop, Eustaquio tells Clarín that he trusts justice and hopefully "he does not have to see them free or to be released due to illness."

Eustaquio has three children: Candela (13), Jonhatan (11) and Rocío (9). “Everyone helps in carpentry, they are workers and we try to instill them to be good people,” says the man. “That is why I want to give parents advice: to raise their children on the path of truth, justice and love. Under God's laws, and if they cannot, ask the Lord for wisdom. Raising them in this way, these things would not happen, there would not be so much crime in our society. ”

These days, Eustaquio's phone has not stopped ringing and receiving support messages. The whole town is watching this family. "People accompanied us a lot, I never imagined that it would be like that," he says, surprised.
