Cross-country skiers did not have good cards in this low-snow winter. Most of the trails couldn't even be groomed. A few routes at Tegernsee saved the season.

Tegernsee Valley - Winter was a moody diva this year: The snow always came slowly and in small quantities, the temperatures were far too mild. It was a modest season for the fans of Nordic winter sports, most of the trails could not be groomed. At Tegernsee, one is nevertheless satisfied with the changeable winter: after all, cross-country skiing was possible throughout.

"The current state is still good," says Christine Miller from Tegernseer Tal Tourismus GmbH (TTT). The project manager for the active area means the trails between Klamm, Bayerwald and Glashütte in Kreuth and the high-altitude Sutten circuit in Rottach-Egern. All other trails in the Tegernsee valley - more than 100 kilometers in total - were not in operation during this low-snow winter.

Bad Wiessee and Gmund, for example, were a total failure for cross-country skiers this year. Miller believes it is very unlikely that there will still be tracks here in the remaining season. Nevertheless, the TTT employee has so far only received "positive and grateful feedback" from the athletes. The cross-country skiers were happy to be able to make their rounds anywhere in the Bavarian Oberland.

Cross-country skiing also made the mixed winter particularly difficult this year. "If it rains in again and again, it breaks a lot," Miller explains, adding: "Our cross-country skiers did a great job." And it hasn't ended yet. After the Suttenrunde is over 1000 meters and the temperatures in the Kreuther Klamm are known to be lower than elsewhere, Miller assumes that the trails can still be used until the end of the season at the end of March.

Even if damage limitation was possible at Tegernsee and almost all cross-country skiing courses could take place: For the next winter Miller hopes again for a season "with a lot more snow". "After all," she says with a view to the winter sports season, "there are whole livelihoods attached".

Operations in the ski areas also got off to a slow start this year. Read more about it here.
