(CNN) - The Vatican answered questions about Pope Francis' health after reports suggested he had been screened for the coronavirus by saying that the pontiff has a cold that is "running its course."

"The cold with which the Holy Father was diagnosed a few days ago continues its course, without any symptoms related to other pathologies," said the head of the Holy See press office, Matteo Bruni, in a statement.

The statement follows the reports in Italian media that suggested that the pope had been examined for coronavirus. No information was provided on whether the potato had actually been examined for the virus.
