Anyone but Trump

2020-03-04T23:15:11.856Z

If a liar, unpredictable and far-right candidate got the Republican nomination and then the presidency, why couldn't an honest candidate get it?

The question that is settled is whether Trump will be a mere parenthesis or leave a deep mark that modifies and even perverts the great American democracy. Hence the enormous responsibility that falls to Democratic voters, who are the ones who select in their primaries the candidate who can snatch the White House from the current president on November 3.

There are many Americans who prefer anyone over Trump. But that does not mean that anyone serves to defeat him. On the contrary, it is possible that some Democratic candidate meets all the conditions to fall before Trump. For a large part of Democratic voters and for moderate Republicanism most disgusted with trumpism, this is the case of Bernie Sanders.

His program, perceived as a socialist and revolutionary, even though from Europe it can be considered a social democrat, acts as a revulsion for many moderate voters in favor of abstention and even, in the case of conservatives in the fiscal field, to stimulate the vote covering his nose in favor of Trump. In favor of Sanders, the troubled spirit of the times plays: if a liar, unpredictable and far-right candidate got the Republican nomination and then the presidency, why could an honest, predictable and far-left candidate not get it.

Confidence in the random benefits of political polarization has its limits, so it has all the logic that the Democratic camp is mobilized to place Trump in front of a candidate who heads a large centrist coalition, capable of even scratching Republican votes and keep at the same time the left wing of the Democrats. The selection is not easy, because before leading the coalition against Trump must form a coalition that defeats Sanders.

The method and the messy and confusing calendar of the primary elections, especially the direct democracy of the assemblies or caucuses, do not help. The democratic system as a whole is subjected to a stress test that ranges from the presidency to the primary. If Trump becomes a four-year accident on November 4, the United States will have passed the test satisfactorily, but if it remains in the White House, the crisis will cover the entire democratic building.

There were several options to try to kick Trump. Finding another Obama was the one that could come to anyone's mind. It was possible to repeat the attempt to place a woman for the first time, after the failure of Hillary Clinton. Even bet on a woman of color. Or for a man married to another man. None worked. With the poor result of Mike Bloomberg, the counter-figure of a presentable and decent plutocrat has also fallen.

To throw Trump, 73, Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders, 77 and 78 respectively. Older men to lead or a great centrist coalition or redemption for the unbearable purity of the left. To keep in mind that with the impeachment it became clear that Trump prefers Sanders and designates Joe Biden as the enemy to bring down.
