In Blue and White this evening (Wednesday), a move for MK Meir Cohen's election to chair Knesset Speaker in place of July Edelstein will be initiated.

White and blue officials confirmed tonight that an effort was made to raise a majority in opposition to support Cohen's election as Knesset Deputy Speaker in the last term. Who together have, according to the final results of the elections, 62 seats. Badelstein will support all the outgoing coalition factions that number 58 members.

According to Knesset members of the Knesset from the joint list, they will receive significant compensation for supporting Meir Cohen's election to the Knesset Speaker, but no such promise has been made at this time, mainly because there is a strained relationship between Ayman Odeh and senior officials in Blue and White.

If the attempts come up nicely in the next two weeks, Blue and White may bring Cohen's nomination for Knesset approval at the festive opening session on March 16. Edelstein and Cohen's spokesmen have not yet responded to the report.

Edelstein (61) was first elected to the Knesset as part of "Israel in Aliyah" and was the absorption minister in two terms and then the Minister of Information and Diaspora. In 2013, he was first elected to the Knesset Speaker, in 2015 he was re-elected, and in April this year he was elected third when no one was running for him. Since the dissolution of the 21st Knesset, he continues in office until the next Speaker is elected.

MK Cohen (63) Cohen was an educator and a school director, and then was elected mayor of Dimona, where he served until 2013 when he was elected to the Knesset. In his first term in the Knesset, he was the Minister of Welfare and in 2015 was elected Deputy Speaker of the Knesset. In April, he was re-elected to this position.
