Attorney General Avihai Mandelblit attacked Attorney General Amir Ohana at a conference tonight (Wednesday) at Bar Ilan University.
Mendelblit addressed Minister Ohana's remarks, saying: "The minister's words reflect an unacceptable approach - an approach of gatekeeper loyalty to the position holder who appointed him. An approach whereby a clash between the government and the law, the gatekeeper is required to favor the government."
Among other things, Mandelblit referred to the Deputy Attorney General, saying that both the Shamgar Commission report and the government decisions dealing with senior appointments make it clear that with regard to senior public service positions, which include gatekeeping components, various procedural guarantees are needed to establish an effective buffer between the political echelons. The nominee and the nominating party.
"These guarantees will ensure that the position holder holds office independently, regardless of the nominee or political level. The main guarantees are the appointment of the position holder, the existence of a fixed term, and the manner in which the position holder is ousted," Mandelblit said.
He also said that "in the context of the State Attorney's office, the importance of maintaining his absolute independence from the political echelon takes precedence, given his position as head of the State Attorney's Office, which believes in the conduct of criminal proceedings. In the prosecution's case, the State Attorney is second only to the Attorney General."
Mandelblit addressed the attacks against him, saying: "Unfortunately, attacks on Israeli law and judicial systems have recently become a breach of vision. Some of the attacks are directed at such entities and others serving in these systems, due to decisions made in their roles. I am often attacked as well. Frankly, it's important to say - these attacks do not deter me. There is nothing in the world to divert me from the straight path - from the path of justice and justice. "
