Iranian news agency Fars News reported Saturday that a senior area commander in the Quds Force of the Revolutionary Guards has been eliminated in Syria.
The assassinated commander is reported to be Farhad Dibrian, of the same rank as the champion, and he was eliminated in the Saida Zinab neighborhood south of the capital Damascus.
The Saida Zinab neighborhood is an important Shiite stronghold in the southern suburbs of Damascus and is a pilgrimage center for Shiites from all over the world. In the past, Israel has attacked terrorist operatives in the area that have been targeted to hit Israel.
The Iranian media did not specify what Dibrian's role in Syria was, but claimed to have participated in battles against the ISIS terrorist organization around the city of Tadmor in the eastern state. It is also not specified who committed the assassination or whether there is a certain suspicion.
On Wednesday, planes attacked several Revolutionary Guards and Hezbollah terrorist targets at military bases near Homs. Other sites were also attacked near the Israeli border on the Syrian Golan Heights. State media outlets have accused Israel of assault.
