Democratic nomination contestant Bernie Sanders on Tuesday canceled a meeting in Cleveland on the advice of local authorities, said his communications director, a first in the US presidential campaign.

"Due to public health and safety concerns, we are canceling this evening's meeting in Cleveland" in Ohio, Mike Casca wrote in a statement. "We respect the warnings of Ohio State officials, who have expressed concerns about hosting large events in closed locations during the coronavirus epidemic . "
