In response to the impact of the epidemic, the eight funded colleges have suspended classes since the Lunar New Year holidays and have switched to online courses. PolyU has launched online teaching for five weeks starting on February 10. This week is a rest week, and we will continue to teach online for eight weeks next week. However, many medical-related courses at the university, such as nursing, social work, optometry, and occupational therapy, all have clinical internships and skills training. It is difficult to replace them with online teaching, so face-to-face teaching will resume as soon as next week. It also does not rule out that we have to go back to school to make up lessons in the summer vacation to catch up with teaching progress. The interview will be postponed for three weeks to mid-May.

Optometry resumes clinical practice early next month

Cen Haoqiang, Dean of the PolyU School of Medical and Social Sciences, said that taking nursing as an example, students must complete the specified number of internship hours and skills training, or fail to obtain professional certification and become registered nurses. He expects that the number of internship sessions will be needed in the future. If additional arrangements are made on weekends or evenings, he is not worried about students delaying graduation.

However, Lin Guozhen, an associate professor and director of the School of Optometry at PolyU, said that the last year of Optometry is a clinical internship, which was affected by the suspension of the epidemic. The internship in the next semester has been stopped. The number of sessions, the internship will be completed as soon as June.

Strengthen disinfection classrooms to arrange face masks for students

PolyU Deputy Principal and Academic Vice President Wei Bingjiang said that the school made a limited decision to resume face-to-face classrooms in balancing teacher and student safety, learning outcomes and graduation dates. He pointed out that the school will strengthen disinfection of classrooms and limit the number of students per class to 30 or more. It will also arrange larger classrooms and laboratories and distribute masks to each student. He said that, overall, the teaching progress of each subject has not been affected; if students fail to adapt to online teaching, the school also allows students to withdraw from the subject or propose suspension of school at the end of April. About 100 students exchange abroad

The global epidemic has intensified, and many Hong Kong students studying abroad have returned to Hong Kong to avoid the disease. Wei Bingjiang said that PolyU currently has about a hundred students communicating overseas. The school has informed them to return to Hong Kong under safe conditions. However, considering that the cabin is a high-risk environment, some students have decided to stay there, and the school respects the decision. He said that more than 1,000 PolyU foreign students had returned to their country.

In addition, due to the impact of anti-revision regulations, the PolyU campus became a battlefield for demonstrations last year. Wei Bingjiang said that the incident had a certain impact on mainland students, and the number of university graduates had decreased by about 30%. As for university maintenance costs, he said that the school still counted the related losses.
