Stay home, but get out of position

Ofir Tubol

Judging by my varied torch, the Corona crisis is the eternal proof that there is God and there is no God either; That socialism, but also capitalism, provides the perfect way to deal with the crisis; And that the culprits of spreading the disease are ultra-Orthodox, secular, Arab and infiltrative.

And how is it, the crisis proves beyond all doubt that my political camp is right: lucky to be in the hands of an experienced and charismatic man like Netanyahu, who is taking advantage of the crisis to make Israel a dictatorship!

"The Corona crisis proves that universalism is dead," "It turns out that the best cure for Corona is a functioning welfare state," "The crisis is an opportunity to streamline the public sector" are just some of the statements thrown into the air. It is the good hour of the fanatics of ideologies that reality somehow always sits precisely on their worldview, and nothing can undermine their absolute truth.

The situation of identity and tribal politics is also no different. Everyone, remarkably, blames exactly the same sectors that they blamed on all the world's problems the day before the corona: Haredim gather at weddings contrary to instructions, hedonistic secularists fill the seashore, Arabs scream at the law, and Africans in southern Tel Aviv are living the routine. And the Chinese? Against them we have nothing, which will be healthy.

Almost all of us sit at home, worried, bored and helpless about the future. We jump on every report and look for guilty candles for the outbreak of the disease and heroes for talking about it. This "spoon situation" is a fruitful cushion for the ideas lobbyist. If anything - but really! - that the corona proves except that my ideology is correct and that my opponent is wrong - is that we have no idea.

That all of our ideologies, all the sectoral animosities we cultivate these days are just irrelevant right now. All are void in relation to the professional work of doctors, scientists and officials who are maneuvering in the crisis.

Of course, it is good that we have welfare institutions and that the weak public should not rely on expensive private insurance; And it is clear that private pharmaceutical companies are stimulated by the potential gain of billions to find the cure for the disease; It is clear that national solidarity is needed to solve the problem, and it is also clear that we are all human beings in terms of the virus.

We live in a state of intersectoral tensions and in a society with a high ideological rate in the West. But such a crisis is the time to put aside the big prejudices, ideologies and set mantras and adopt a pragmatic approach. It won't hurt us to abandon the position for a few moments, practice "breaking lines" and exit our narrow sector interest. And maybe, who knows, we will adopt it through looking even after the crisis passes.
