In the outbreak of new coronavirus pneumonia (commonly known as Wuhan pneumonia), classes in all schools in Hong Kong will be closed after the Chinese Lunar New Year's holiday. Most schools will switch to online teaching, of which the Chinese University of Hong Kong will start on February 17th, according to the second semester class time Table for online teaching in real time.

Deputy Principal Pan Weixian said that CUHK will temporarily maintain online teaching. Although the school has postponed the semester until May 2nd, due to the epidemic situation, she does not expect to resume face-to-face classes this semester. Some courses under the JUPAS have listed interview sections. Pan Weixian pointed out that the school will use the video conference program Zoom for interviews, and the procedures should be similar.

Beginning on February 17th, the University of China started to use the video conference program Zoom for real-time online teaching according to the class schedule for the second semester. Currently, it provides more than 2,500 online classes daily. (Photo by Lu Yiming)

CUHK provides over 2,500 online classes daily

Starting from February 17th, the University of China will use the video conference program Zoom to conduct online teaching in real time according to the class schedule for the second semester. Deputy Principal Pan Weixian said in an interview that at present, CUHK provides more than 2,500 online classes each day, with a total of more than 70,000 participants. The attendance rate of students is 90%.

Qin Jiahui, director of the Research Center for Enhancing Research of the University of China, said that the school has collected opinions of about 2,000 students and 350 staff members. Of these, more than 70% of the students interviewed said that the acceptance of Zoom online teaching was acceptable, and more than four adults said they were satisfied with the online teaching. Three adults are neutral. As for the teachers interviewed, more than 65% said they were satisfied or very satisfied with Zoom's online teaching, and more than 60% indicated that they were effective in teaching.

Set up a virtual private network (VPN) for overseas students

Online teaching requires a stable network. CUHK has therefore invested in expanding bandwidth and set up a virtual private network (VPN) for overseas students to use. If students need computer equipment, the school also provides a laptop computer loan service. Qin Jiahui pointed out that currently students from 18 countries or regions around the world participate in online teaching, and their punctuality and attendance rates have also increased relatively.

The repertoire of the weekly meeting will be changed to reading

In addition, the weekly meeting of the Yifu Academy of CUHK was also moved to the Internet. The repertoire originally performed by the Yifu Theatre during the weekly meeting was also changed to read the drama and broadcast live to students through Zoom.

As for course assessment, Pan Weixian pointed out that the school has always allowed the teachers to decide the assessment method by themselves, and some subjects were scheduled to be held in mid-May, which would also allow the teachers to perform other alternative methods. Some courses have laboratory classes. Students need to attend a certain number of classes to graduate. Under the circumstances that online teaching cannot be replaced, Pan Weixian pointed out that in recent months, the school has allowed some students to return to school to use the laboratory in accordance with the epidemic prevention standards and requirements. She emphasized that there should be no failure to graduate due to online teaching.

Pan Weixian believes that the school needs to plan for the worst. At present, the school continues to maintain online teaching, and she does not expect to resume face-to-face classes this semester. (Photo by Lu Yiming)

Pan Weixian believes that the school needs to plan for the worst. At present, the school continues to maintain online teaching. If it can resume face-to-face classes, students and staff will be notified 4 weeks in advance. However, even if CUHK has been postponed until May 2 to end the semester, due to the epidemic situation, she does not expect to resume face-to-face classes this semester.

The 2020 secondary school diploma test (DSE) written test will be postponed from April 24th, and will be postponed to July 15th from the release date. JUPAS selection results are tentatively announced on August 10. In the case where CUHK has not fully resumed the face-to-face class, Pan Weixian expects that this year's enrollment will also use the online system, and some courses will use the Zoom platform for interviews. She believes that some departments have set up online interviews in the past, and the whole process is efficient, and Zoom also has a "Waiting Room" function. I believe that apart from not being face to face, there is not much difference in procedures and communication methods.
