Coronavirus: in Saint-Malo, fishermen in danger

THROUGHOUT CONFINED FRANCE - Hit hard by the coronavirus crisis, they remain at the quay.


The welcome is as icy and biting as the sea breeze on the fishing port of Saint-Malo. A fisherman, who stays at the quay, is like a fish extracted from the sea to be confined in an aquarium. Out of his natural environment, he goes around in circles like a prisoner. He eats his brakes and tries to contain his anger. Nourished by the epics of the open sea, he is not one to vent his difficulties, and even less in front of a Parisian journalist. This Thursday morning, the Bouvet Basin looks like a large jar filled with fishing vessels with as many dark-tempered sailors, while the profession is hit hard by the consequences of the Covid-19.

We walk along the quay, where the touch-key ships are moored. The crews are busy maintaining the equipment with an obsession in mind. Always be ready to go back to sea, with a snap of your fingers. As at sea, we go to the essentials, we do not bother in superfluous ways. Can we talk to the boss?
