The coronavirus pandemic has killed more than 4,000 people in Spain according to a report released Thursday by the authorities, who hope to approach the peak of contagions when many hospitals are overwhelmed. Second country in the world with the most deaths from Covid-19 after Italy, Spain recorded 655 new deaths in 24 hours, bringing the death toll to 4088 deaths, according to the Ministry of Health. A total of 56,188 cases of contamination have been confirmed.

"Almost 87% of the victims are over 70 , " said the director of the health emergency center, Fernando Simon. Half of the dead are located in the Madrid region. The number of people healed has also increased, by 30% in 24 hours, with 7,015 people in total. The increase in cases has been staggering in recent days, despite the almost total confinement decreed on March 14. The death toll has quadrupled since Friday.

Authorities note, however, the slowdown in the increase in the number of deaths, which increased by 19% Thursday against 27% Wednesday where a record increase of 738 deaths in 24 hours had been recorded. The increase in the number of cases also tends to slow down, increasing by 18% between Wednesday and Thursday, two points less than the two previous days.
