The runoff election in the municipality of Reichling is extremely exciting: the two candidates for mayor separated only 4.4 percent of the votes in the first ballot.

Reichling - Alfons Schelkle, who is running for the village community of Reichling, got the most votes in the mayoral election just two weeks ago with 37.2 percent, Leis from the “voter community” (WG) was just behind with 32.8 percent. It is difficult to predict how the runoff will end now, everything is completely open.

And how do the candidates see their chances themselves? "It's a very difficult question," says Schelkle. “The main question is how the Ludenhausen residents choose, who voted for Lars Scharding with a large majority,” he says. "Ludenhausen can make the choice." Overall, Schelkle sees his chances at 50:50 percent.

Runoff election in Reichling: This is how Johannes Leis assesses the situation

Johannes Leis assesses the situation in exactly the same way: “Fifty-fifty” means his chances, he says. Because of the exit restrictions, he was no longer able to get as much feedback from the population, says the 30-year-old, who works for a motorsport company in a management position. But he was now "live" again on Instagram and Facebook, he explains. "But because of the postal vote, we actually only had one week left to campaign." Most would have already cast their vote, Leis suspects.

Johannes Lei's "Electoral Community" Reichling

After the first Sunday of the election, Alfons Schelkle was mainly backed by residents from the Reichling district. "Many Reichlingers gave me courage," explains the 56-year-old master carpenter. In Reichling itself Schelkle had by far the most votes (141 votes without postal voting), while in Ludenhausen he clearly lagged behind his two competitors with twelve votes. Leis had won the second most votes both in Reichling and in Ludenhausen (91 and 77 votes - each without postal voting).

Runoff election in Reichling: Not a clear favorite

On the first Sunday of the election, Lei said that the race was still very relaxed. Now this is a little different, meanwhile he is already a little excited: "Now it's all or nothing," he says.

Leis is quite satisfied with his result of 32.8 percent, which he had achieved in the first election. "You can live with that," he says. Even Schelkle cannot complain: "One could already expect that it would be very scarce."

So there is no clear favorite in the runoff election. As for Lars Scharding, who left after the first election? He did not want to make a recommendation, he said when asked.

He was not directly disappointed with his own election result (30 percent), "but of course I would have liked to have been the mayor," he admits. "Now I will have more time for my seven children," Scharding sees an advantage. Because although he was not elected, he will still hand over the direction of the school and youth band to his son Fabian.
