In Wolfsburg, the corona virus hits the weakest of the weak - in an old people's home. The situation in the facility for dementia is described as extremely difficult.
Wolfsburg (dpa) - After the death of twelve corona patients in a Wolfsburg nursing home, infected people are separated from negatively tested residents.
72 out of about 165 residents are currently infected, said the head of the Wolfsburg Health Department, Friedrich Habermann. The twelve residents had died within a few days. "We had to mourn the first death on Monday," said Lothar Laubert, director of the old people's home for nursing dementia.
Mayor Klaus Mohrs said that a surprising number had died without having symptoms of Corona. The situation is extremely difficult for the ecclesiastical home with often highly demented people, said the SPD politician. "But we are only at the beginning of development. It will be a very, very hard time for all of us."
"We are extremely sorry and we are trying everything to protect the other people," said Mohrs. All people living in the home were tested with a smear. If the result is negative, the test is repeated every three days. In the next few weeks, the infected and those who tested negative will live on different floors.
Mohrs announced extensive hygiene measures for the care facility. Locks are designed to prevent people from separate areas from colliding. He believes that Germany still has to endure many unpleasant situations. For a short time it was thought about converting a Wolfsburg hotel for the nursing patients. For the time being, however, this will not be implemented.
