+++ Analyzes and results of the first ballot on March 15th, 2020 +++

Update March 17, 2 p.m .: Red, red and again red: Our map shows the Munich OB election from the perspective of the individual city districts. Nowhere did the incumbent Dieter Reiter become dangerous. But the surprises await in detail. In the 2020 local elections in Bavaria on March 15. Munich chose its mayor - or not. In the first ballot, incumbent Dieter Reiter (SPD) narrowly missed the absolute majority - and now has to run against CSU candidate Kristina Frank in the runoff election.

A first data journalistic analysis including an interactive map of the individual boroughs shows: There was not a single borough in Munich in which the second strongest candidate in Munich, Kristina Frank (CSU), could be dangerous to the incumbent. Dieter Reiter received more than 42 percent of the vote across the board and was thus unchallenged everywhere - while other candidates reported a much more volatile result depending on the district.

In Feldmoching-Hasenbergl there was still the smallest distance between Frank and Reiter (15 percentage points) - most with a whopping 36.9 percentage points in Sendling. The latter, however, was not due to Reiters special strength in Sendling - but to the fact that CSU woman Frank could not score here at all. The stronghold for Dieter Reiter was Ramersdorf-Perlach, where he was able to get 51.5 percent of the vote - with this result, there would have been no runoff election in Munich.

The AfD cannot score in the Munich OB election - except in a city district

The overall third place, the Green Katrin Habenschaden, was the most convincing in the Schwanthalerhöhe district with 30.6 percent most Munich residents - but here too Dieter Reiter kept them at a safe distance. The worst result was damage to property with Feldmoching-Hasenbergl exactly where Christina Frank almost achieved the strongest result. So Reiter turned out to be the consensus candidate, while elsewhere there were very different personal and party political preferences.

By the way, beyond the SPD, Greens and CSU, no candidate in a city district managed to get a double-digit number of votes. The AfD candidate Wolfgang Wiehle in Milbertshofen-Am Hart was able to inspire even more voters - at four percent he got there, at least considerably more than the average 1.4 percent.
