Local governor wounded in Garowe, a semi-autonomous Puntland region in the north, on Sunday in an attack by a suicide bomber who blew himself up near his car, according to an official source and witnesses .
“A suicide bomber targeted the governor and blew himself up. The governor and a former police commander were injured in the explosion and are now being treated at the hospital, as well as a civilian passing by , " the Interior Minister of Puntland told reporters , Mohamed Abdirahman.
Abdisalan Hassan, governor of Nugaal, one of Puntland's administrative divisions, and the former police officer "were seriously injured , " said a witness, Adan Suleyman. Another witness, Abdikarim Ahmed, said the suicide bomber rushed towards the governor's vehicle, which had just parked in front of a police station, before detonating himself.
The attack was claimed by radical Islamist militants Shebab. Affiliated with Al Qaeda, the shebab have sworn the loss of the Somali government, supported by the international community and the 20,000 men of the African Union force in Somalia (Amisom).
