The only casualty is the political system Comment

Eliad Shraga

In his article from yesterday (March 29, 2020), Amnon Lord states that "the main victim of the High Court decision is the High Court," and finds it appropriate to attack me and the movement for quality government. Remember, it was Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein who took hold of the altar horns, barricaded himself in the Mishkan and refused to vacate his chair. In his unprecedented actions in the Knesset, he imposed the tyranny of the minority on the majority and did not allow the vote on the chair.

In contrast, it was the High Court's time - as the sole and only interpreter of the law in a democratic state that separates authorities, balances and critics from one another - who has exercised his powers, moderation and caution, so as not to interfere with the issue at hand. First in the High Court for the Speaker of the Knesset, because of the majority's demand that he leave his office immediately. Second, he set a time for him, having already marked the path, so that Adelstein would make a decision for himself without the High Court intervening. Finally, and only after Edelstein refused, the High Court was forced to declare, by the Honorable Member, that Edelstein's actions were "striving under the foundations of the democratic process, and undermining the status of the Knesset as an independent authority as well as the process of transition."

On the other hand, it was the most egregious time in the political system in Israel, as was the ugly hour of government ministers who challenged the rule of law and the basic principles of the democratic system, in their attempt to persuade Edelstein not to comply with Supreme Court rulings and orders.

It was also Edelstein's ugly hour, in his decision to resign and not uphold the High Court ruling - and all for Netanyahu, who once again abandoned him under the bridge - lost his world and the reputation he had built for years.

Finally, Mr. Lord's attempt to associate the rule of quality with the left-wing camp was a crushing failure. The Movement for Quality Government is a non-partisan movement, and it works against corruption for 30 years, fiercely and vigorously, and against everyone. Do not remember that Amnon Lord had allegations when we dealt with, for example, Shimon Peres in the "stinking exercise," or Ehud Barak in the case of Tze'elim II, or Isaac Herzog in the Amutot affair, or Eric Sharon in his case, nor with Ezer Weizman in the Seroussi affair, or Ehud Olmert in the affair Holyland, and not even with Ashkenazi in the Harpaz affair, as in many good uphill. Mr. Lord's attempts to define me, too, were destined for failure. At the time of the "stinking exercise" they called me "fascist", today you call me "leftist". Please note that I am a corruption fighter.

Dr. Eliad Shraga is the Chairman of the Movement for Quality Government
