Erding - Camp Shelterschleife is still idyllic. Only a few hard-working workers announce that a facility is being built in the air base to protect the Erding Clinic from collapse in the event of a dramatic increase in corona patients. The emergency clinic has been under construction for a week, and within two days at the latest you want to be equipped to accept up to 160 patients. In the final stage of construction, even 1000 beds are possible. Erding is one of the first counties with such an additional supply, and also with these dimensions.
Martin Angermaier has been in charge of the asylum waiting room since Wednesday last week. Together with fire brigades and the THW, the deputy district fire council builds up the hospital as local operations manager. The two interconnected halls are almost set up. Only 14 days have passed since the first talks on March 17, before the interim hospital is ready to go.
Four beds in a presswood area - 1000 places are possible
Four beds form a unit surrounded by pressed wood walls. There are still packaged oxygen devices in one corner. District Administrator Martin Bayerstorfer has ordered 200, 38 are already there. In front of the halls is a huge tank trailer with 18 tons of liquid oxygen. The heating fans are from the time when more than 100,000 refugees were distributed to Germany from 2015 onwards. Air conditioning units are to be purchased for the summer. Meters of cable were laid, luminaires installed, sockets attached, bunk beds unscrewed. On the other side of the street there are containers: changing rooms, showers, toilets.
Many doctors and nurses register for duty
Angermaier and his fire brigade comrades will quit their service here at the end of the week. Then Dr. Dirk Last, director of the clinic, heads one of 26 emergency hospitals across Bavaria. He plans with 35 specialists, including 19 doctors. The government of Upper Bavaria will send it to him, Bayerstorfer has been promised.
Last emphasizes: "At the hospital we need our people ourselves." He is currently writing the rosters. Medical Director PD. Dr. Lorenz Bott-Flügel reports that numerous colleagues followed his call. “There are former doctors from our company and colleagues who are on parental leave, but also resident doctors whose practices are currently closed due to the pandemic. “It is gratifying that a large number of medical students have registered. They have time now, the universities are closed. ”Nursing Director Gertrud Friess-Ott explains that the search for nurses is time-consuming,“ but we can do it, also with the support of the nursing students ”.
There is also space for sick people from other counties and from the airport
If even more of the twelve halls are converted, "the government of Upper Bavaria or the Ministry of Health has to send us more staff," the district administrator clarifies. But it is also able to accept patients from neighboring counties and from the airport.
No one knows today whether all these forces and the emergency clinic as a whole are needed. "We want to make provisions, it can happen very quickly," says Bayerstorfer.
Bott-Flügel explains: "Above all, patients with mild symptoms who are just beginning or have already subsided should be taken in." There is oxygen, "but we cannot ventilate anyone here. It's not an intensive care unit. ”But there is still space in the clinic a good five kilometers away. The isolation station there alone can accommodate up to 100 corona patients.
Ten Covid-19 patients in the intensive care unit
A total of 25 Covid-19 patients are currently being cared for there. Ten of these are in the intensive care unit, eight have to be ventilated. ”Bott-Flügel reports:“ We already had seriously ill young patients aged 38 and 42. ”In order to conserve the intensive resources and maintain capacity, three patients had already been moved but also three from other clinics. His experience: “The course of the disease can increase dramatically within a few hours. And that happens more and more often. "
The number of corona patients in the district of Erding rose yesterday from 23 to 350 - again a rather moderate plus. The new cases come from Erding (7), Bockhorn, Isen (4 each), Dorfen, Finsing (2 each), Berglern, Fraunhofer, Neuching and Wartenberg (1 each). Bayerstorfer said of the Moosinninger who died of Covid-19: "It was an 80-year-old with previous illnesses."
Less operation at the screening points
According to Bayerstorfer, the three screening points, where a good 3,000 swabs have been taken since mid-March, are now "significantly less crowded". The effort can be reduced for the time being. On weekends only the drive and walk-in test point at the FOS / BOS on Siglfinger Straße is open. A transfer must still be submitted. The citizen phone is also noticeably less frequented.
