Disposable masks: sewing for the garbage can?

800 meters of fabric for disposable masks have been distributed to the district communities. The response is very different.

District - In order to counteract the mask bottleneck in the Corona crisis, Bavaria's Minister of Economics, Hubert Aiwanger, made 800 meters of fabric available to each district, from which one-way masks for old people's homes and neighborhood helpers are to be created. On Sunday, 400 meters were distributed to the municipalities: 28 meters of fleece for each district municipality. The echo is divided. While Gilching reordered the day before yesterday, the seamstresses in Feldafing and Berg see problems with the processing of the slippery fabric. And with the fact that they are disposable masks.

For a week and a half, cloth masks have been produced in the Tutzingen monastery like on an assembly line - but the nuns returned the nonwoven for the disposable masks to the community. "Our cotton masks are reusable and are similar in protection to the fleece masks," says Sister Renate Basler. “It makes more sense to sew them than disposable masks. It's not that great if we produce for the garbage can. "

When it became clear in Feldafing that the masks were for single use only, the willingness to sew disappeared. "The fabric cannot be washed and is awfully difficult to work with," Mayor Bernhard Sontheim heard from the volunteers. For example, the necessary folds could not be ironed at all. Sontheim makes it clear: "It is sad - so many people are ready to help, and then you get a pile of rubbish delivered." Bergs City Councilor Rupert Monn sees it similarly. He complained that necessary accessories such as wire and rubber bands were missing. The district was still able to organize some of it at the weekend.

The Herrschingen seamstresses solved these problems differently. "Do you know these wire things that come with the freezer bags? We incorporated them, ”reports Therese Birner. She is a handicraft teacher and, together with five colleagues, sewed 150 masks in a day and a half. They did not need rubbers, but cut ribbons out of the fabric. The rulers were at school under relatively professional conditions. There was a rubber mat that was helpful when cutting. "I can imagine that it is difficult when someone is inexperienced," says Therese Birner.

Two groups sew in Gilching. The first 28 meters have already been processed, replenishment is there according to Mayor Manfred Walter. One group works in Geisenbrunn under the direction of Vice Mayor Martin Fink, the other under the direction of Anja Zimmermann. The owner of the wool and sewing shop in Gilching cut the fabric for her group centrally, said Walter. "She also got wire. And the fastening tapes were, as far as possible, made of rubber band or of the fabric itself. "

Sewing is also carried out diligently in Machtlfing. "Our seamstresses knew from the start that the masks were only for single use," says Andechs Mayor Anna Neppel. Around 20 women work in the community, which Michaela Grötsch organizes. She sees a lot of sense in the action. "The nursing services otherwise have no masks, and that is not an alternative." She also had to improvise: the wire that holds the Andechs masks on their noses is thin floral wire that is folded several times.

"We think the volunteer work of the volunteers is really great," said district spokeswoman Barbara Beck. She knows about the skepticism about the sewing campaign. “But the fact is that there is a very great shortage of protective masks worldwide. In this situation, you have to use unusual methods. ”Supposedly you can wash the masks once.
