One of the most important hubs in the world is struggling with the aftermath of the coronavirus pandemic. London's Heathrow Airport is now reacting to the significantly lower air traffic.

London (AP) - In view of the coronavirus crisis and the associated lower air traffic, London's Heathrow airport will close one of its two runways from Monday.

It is about increasing resilience and security for employees, passengers and cargo during the Covid 19 outbreak, a spokesman for Europe's largest airport said, PA news agency reported. The two runways would be used alternately every week.

The spokesman emphasized that the airport would remain open - even if there were significantly fewer flights worldwide. It could continue to play an essential role in providing vital medical supplies and food for the country during this unprecedented pandemic.

Heathrow claims to be the busiest international airport in the world and one of the most important hubs. More than 80 million passengers were registered in 2018. In total, there were more than 475,600 starts in the same year. Heathrow is served by 90 airlines with more than 180 destinations.

In the UK, London is particularly hard hit by the pandemic. The number of deaths from Covid-19 lung disease increased by 569 in the United Kingdom on Thursday to 2921. Just under 34,000 people were demonstrably infected with the virus. However, the actual number of infected people is likely to be much higher. Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who is also infected, is heavily criticized for reacting too late to the pandemic with a lurching course.

It was only in late February that a British court shook plans to expand Heathrow Airport in London. Reason: The construction of a third runway is incompatible with the goals of the Paris climate agreement. The government must therefore rethink the project.
