Washington (dpa) - More than 12,000 people have applied as astronauts after a tender to the US space agency NASA. They would now be examined and the names of the selected will be announced in the summer of 2021, said Nasa.

In February, NASA announced that it was looking for new astronauts. The requirements: US citizenship, master's degree in a science subject and at least two years of professional experience or at least 1000 hours of flight training. The applications came from all 50 states in the United States, said Nasa. Before admission, the candidates must also pass a fitness test before they could possibly leave for the moon and Mars. The application deadline was March 31.

A record 18,000 people had applied for the last call in 2017. Eleven men and women had been selected and completed their training in January. In total, NASA currently has almost 50 active astronauts at its disposal.
