Three months after the first corona infections became known in China, the number of cases detected worldwide rose to more than one million. The number of unreported cases is likely to be significantly higher. The focus has long been on countries other than China.

Washington (dpa) - The number of detected infections with the corona virus has exceeded the one million mark worldwide. This emerges from current figures from the American Johns Hopkins University.

More than 51,000 people worldwide have died so far from the lung disease Covid-19, which the Sars-CoV-2 virus, which was practically unknown three months ago, can trigger.

The number of unreported cases and numbers of deaths is likely to be high, say scientists. First, the number of infections detected depends on how many people are tested. Virtually no country in the world has enough tests and laboratory capacities for evaluation. In addition, some countries started testing late or deliberately opt for a selective test strategy. On the other hand, many people with previous illnesses or in old age may have died from the viral infection without doctors having recognized or being able to check this at the time.

According to the Johns Hopkins University figures, Germany has the highest number of detected infections after the USA, Italy, Spain and China. By Thursday there were more than 84,000. The number of fatalities in Germany, however, is extremely low compared to the total number of infections detected or measured in terms of population, with more than 1,000. Experts attribute this to good preventive care, good hospital care and the fact that, in Germany, younger people, who are often more milder, appear to be infected.

The head of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, expressed alarm. "I am deeply concerned about the rapid increase in cases and the global spread of infection at the beginning of the fourth month since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic," he said. "The number of deaths has more than doubled in the past week."

Most cases are now recorded in the USA: According to Johns Hopkins University, more than 236,000 infections have now been identified there. Italy has about half as many infections with at least 115,000. However, the United States also has 327 million inhabitants, five and a half times as many as Italy (a good 60 million). Spain is just behind with more than 110,000 reported corona cases. Measured by the size of the population, Spain (a good 46 million) has been hit harder than Italy.

The values of individual countries are difficult to compare overall due to the different test rate and the expected high number of unreported cases. In addition, the comparison of the absolute numbers is just because of the different population sizes. Based on 100,000 inhabitants, there are more infections detected in Germany than in the USA.
