An archaeologist and nine of his students have been arrested by Peruvian police for searching a pre-Hispanic cemetery during compulsory confinement due to the coronavirus epidemic, the Culture Ministry said on Monday.

" I deplore the actions of archaeologist Pieter Van Dalen and a group of nine people who were carrying out excavations on April 4 at the archaeological site of the Macatón cemetery, in Chancay, during the state of emergency " and the confinement mandatory, Culture Minister Sonia Guillén told Channel N. " It is unfortunate and shameful, " she added.

The archaeologist and students of the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos had received prior authorization to excavate this cemetery of Chancay culture, some 80 km north of Lima, but they were not allowed to violate the confinement in force in the country since March 16. Their authorization was " suspended " due to the coronavirus epidemic, said the minister.

According to Canal N, the archaeologist and his students were taken to the Chancay police station, and the prosecutor's office opened an investigation.

Since the start of confinement, more than 51,000 Peruvians have been arrested and later released for violating the ban on leaving their homes, President Martin Vizcarra said on Monday.

Peru has recorded 2,561 cases of coronavirus, with 93 deaths since the appearance of the first case a month ago. In addition to confinement, the Andean country has also closed all its borders and airports, and decreed a daily curfew from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
