SNAPSHOTS AROUND BREAKFAST (2/10) - Second step in this collection of breakfasts around the world, under the harsh sun of the Greek Dodecanese islands, where Kos invites calorie treats before walking in the footsteps of Hippocrates, from the sea to the mountains.

Who has not dreamed of opening its shutters on a new landscape? To welcome each sunrise around a breakfast which belongs only to the place visited. Here is a collection of breakfasts around the world around the plate, the bowl, the timpani ... So many snapshots delivering perfumes, colors and cultures.

The day belongs to the early risers, they say. The bougatsas from Café Ariston, too. In Kos Town, these vanilla cream pastries, coated with honey or icing sugar, are a treat for locals at breakfast. From cowardly twins, bougatsas are victims of their success. Just like the baklava and almond cakes, dripping with sugar, caloric at will, and known to sweeten the day to come. Ariston's treats are an island institution, the most emblematic of the Dodecanese. The recipes would not have changed by a gram since the opening of the premises in 1952. Which have kept an atmosphere with old-fashioned charm. Time unravels in the midst of regular conversations over Greek coffee with the scent of the Orient or a fresh lemonade. 13 hours. The shop closes overnight. There is no longer a single delicacy.

Superstar hippocrates

Kos is not the most beautiful of the Greek islands, but it has its character. And not just any since Hippocrates (around 460 - 370 BC) was born there and left his mark there. Bérénice Debras / Le Figaro

A honeyed taste still on the palate, Kos reveals itself under a blazing sun and in a stifling tuft. Shade ! This is the plane tree where, according to legend, Hippocrates (around 460-377 BC) taught medicine to his students. The dates do not coincide (the tree is estimated at 500 years) but what does it matter since we are in the land of mythology. Some would even argue that Hippocrates is from the distant lineage of Hercules (son of Zeus) and Asklepios (son of Apollo)! But let's leave the Gods in peace. Hippocrates, "father of medicine" was born on this summer blue island. We owe him a lot. It was he who first initiated a scientific approach to medicine - treatment was then carried out alongside priests, in temples dedicated to the sick with the help of mystical and religious invocations. He, too, who developed a rigorous method of caring for the search for symptoms to the prescription of a treatment, emphasizing in passing the benefits of a balanced diet on health. Today more than ever, Hippocrates is on everyone's lips ... and screens. The eponymous series by Thomas Lilti paints a picture of the public hospital through a disturbing fiction of realism.

Blue between sky and sea

Walk in this wild island of the Aegean Sea. Bérénice Debras / Le Figaro

The capital of the island in the rearview mirror for a few kilometers, the ruins of Asklepios stand on the heights. From a temple dedicated to the God of Medicine, it was made one of the most important medical complexes in ancient Greece, based on the teaching of Hippocrates. Hospitals and infirmaries, temples and thermal springs… The patients were treated in their physical and mental totality. There is not much left of the site, but it exudes a certain strength coupled with great beauty. Now, the cicadas sing there as on the first day and the smell of pine trees springs from among the stones washed by the sun and the winds. A flight of steps leads to the last terrace. Here, the indigo of the sky drowns in the azure waters of the Aegean Sea. She also seems to be calling us for a dip. Sacred Hippocrates! We would almost have forgotten the rest of the island and its small relief where white villages cling!
