(CNN Spanish) - The world is experiencing a pandemic that has left more than 1.4 million infected and more than 87,000 dead and that has radically changed life on Earth for more than 3 months. It all started on December 31, 2019, 100 days ago. Look at these 100 facts that help understand the crisis the world is experiencing.

1. What is it? Coronaviruses are a large group of viruses that are common among animals. In rare cases, they are what scientists call zoonotic, meaning they can be transmitted from animals to humans.

2. It is not well known where it started: It appears to have originated from bats, but the bat had to have infected another species and then that species to humans. Some reports also pointed to snakes in China's wildlife markets. Another hypothesis suggested that the pangolin was the intermediate host,

3. It spreads when someone comes in contact with the secretions of an infected person, such as cough drops. Depending on how virulent the virus is, a cough, sneeze, or handshake can cause exposure. The virus can also be spread by touching something an infected person has touched and then touching their mouth, nose, or eyes. It is also transmitted from person to person.

4. There is no vaccine to prevent coronavirus, but several laboratories around the world are working to get one. Authorities estimates say it would be ready in about 18 months.

5. There is no specific treatment, but tests are already being done.

6. The main recommendations to avoid getting it are not to touch your eyes, nose and mouth and wash your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.

7. Social isolation, staying home and going out as little as possible, is one of the strategies that countries are using to try to mitigate the spread of the virus and the impact on health systems.

8. The United States is the country with the most cases in the world.

9. Most cases in the US focus on New York

10. Spain is number two, followed by Italy and then France.

11. Wuhan, China, where the virus originated, is already quarantining. China has the largest number of recovered patients in the world, according to Johns Hopkins.
