The 39 Cuban doctors and nurses sent to reinforce Andorra to fight against the coronavirus pandemic started working on Wednesday after being tested negative for covid-19, announced the Andorran government.

On April 1, a caregiver had tested positive for the disease and placed in isolation. The rest of the delegation had been confined. But two subsequent tests on the caregiver in question were negative, according to the Andorran Ministry of Health. The rest of the delegation was also tested and is negative. The Pyrenean principality of some 77,000 inhabitants, landlocked between Spain and France, had asked for help in Havana, like Italy, to assist its health system.

The socialist island has long established the export of medical services, which is one of the engines of its economy. The Andorran authorities counted 24 dead Wednesday (against 12 on April 1), of which 15 were in retirement homes, 55 people hospitalized, including 17 in intensive care.
