The Chadian army announced on Thursday that it had killed a thousand Boko Haram fighters and lost 52 soldiers during a major operation carried out over the past ten days in retaliation for an attack by the jihadist group which left nearly 100 dead in its ranks.
“Our men occupied two Boko Haram bases on islands (of Lake Chad) and also deployed on the shores of Lake Chad in Niger and Nigeria. They will keep these positions until the troops from these countries arrive, " said army spokesman Azem Bermadoua.

N'Djamena has been fighting Boko Haram in the Lake Chad region for years. Launched in 2009 in northeastern Nigeria, the Boko Haram armed insurgency has left more than 30,000 dead and 2 million displaced.
