Coronavirus in an Ehpad: "When we reopen the dining room, everyone will see the empty places"

In a region relatively untouched by the epidemic, the death of a dozen residents of an Ehpad, near Poitiers, caused a stir.


The small village of La Puye, 40 km east of Poitiers, in Vienne, is not used to spotlights. But the drama that hit his retirement home Sainte-Élisabeth propelled him today to the front of the stage and made the headlines of the local press.

In three weeks, the coronavirus mowed nearly 20% of the residents of this establishment with large austere walls, formerly managed by a religious congregation. For this peaceful nursing home, everything changed on March 14: an octogenarian from the house, hospitalized at the Poitiers university hospital for another pathology, tested positive for Covid-19 and died the following day.
