Washington (AP) - Among the crew members of the US aircraft carrier "USS Theodore Roosevelt", the number of confirmed infections with the novel corona virus has increased significantly.
There are now 416 cases, a spokeswoman for the Ministry of Defense said. At the beginning of the week, the Navy had spoken of around 200 known infections. Almost all of the more than 4,000 crew members have now been tested, the spokeswoman said. A soldier is in intensive care as a result of the Covid-19 lung disease caused by the virus.
Due to the spread of the Sars-CoV-2 coronavirus, the nuclear-powered and armored aircraft carrier lies off the Pacific island of Guam and has been largely evacuated in the meantime. The Coronavirus outbreak on the ship has shaken the U.S. Navy for almost two weeks.
Captain Brett Corzier had asked for help from the military leadership and rapid evacuation of the ship in a dramatic public release letter. Crozier was subsequently released last week.
On Tuesday, incumbent U.S. Secretary of State Thomas Modly resigned after being criticized for making derogatory comments about Crozier. Following the announcement of Modly's remarks, US President Donald Trump had announced that he would like to intervene in the dispute between the captain and the Pentagon.
