How Saoirse Kennedy Hill died (August 2019) 2:06 is still unknown.

(CNN) - Divers found the body of 8-year-old Gideon McKean, the great-grandson of Robert F. Kennedy, on Wednesday afternoon, police said.

They discovered the boy's body in 7.5 meters of water and 3.7 kilometers south of his grandmother's residence in Shady Side, Maryland, the Maryland Natural Resources Police said. He was found about 600 meters from where authorities found the body of his mother, Maeve Kennedy Townsend McKean, 41, on Monday.

The two were last seen on Thursday night.

They were quarantined with the family at their mother's home in Chesapeake Bay. They were playing outside and one of them kicked a ball in the water, said her husband, David McKean.

"They got into a canoe, with the intention of retrieving the ball, and somehow they were pushed by the wind or the tide into the open bay," he wrote on Facebook.

The canoe "appeared to be being pushed by strong winds," police said last week. They were also battling heavy seas, and conditions were such that "they were unable to return to shore."

The overturned canoe was found around 7 p.m. that night, police said.

McKean was the granddaughter of former Attorney General and Senator Robert F. Kennedy.

She was a public health and human rights attorney and served as executive director of the Georgetown University Global Health Initiative.

Maeve McKean's mother, Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, thanked Maryland Governor Larry Hogan, Secretary of Natural Resources Jeannie Haddaway-Riccio, and “the team of more than 50 professionals from the Department of Natural Resources, Anne Arundel, County from Charles and the state police, who spent the past few days searching for our strong and loving Maeve and Gideon. ”

"They have helped us to have some closure on this terrible loss, and our family will always be grateful for their tireless work," said the statement to the family.

Theresa Waldrop, Connor Spielmaker, Rebekah Riess, and Kevin Bohn contributed to this report.
