The Bavarian Red Cross in the Garmisch-Partenkirchen district places permanent orders for the self-made masks. The helpers are currently unable to meet the demand. And therefore react.

Update, April 20, 7:25 p.m .:

Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) surprised people yesterday with the mask requirement from April 27. Those responsible for the BRK district association in Garmisch-Partenkirchen also looked not bad. A flood of e-mails and calls broke out on them: everyone wants the masks of the volunteer dressmakers, who have so far produced almost 7,000 copies. "Orders for 1,300 masks were received on Monday morning alone," emphasizes Jörg Jovy, the spokesman for the district association. Inquiries even came from Hamburg.

Around 500,000 masks are required in the district

Now those responsible have to pull the ripcord. From Tuesday (April 21st) the BRK will no longer accept orders. "With a general mask requirement, it is up to the state and commercial providers to ensure the supply of the population," says Jovy.

The BRK experts assume that in a small district like Garmisch-Partenkirchen alone, around 500,000 masks are required due to the obligation. "The Red Cross cannot produce and distribute these quantities with voluntary structures." Masks previously ordered are being completed and delivered. The aid organization is already asking for patience. "We assure that we will never forget anyone." If those affected can otherwise meet their needs, "it would help us a lot if the order that had become redundant was canceled," says Jovy. Information about orders in the morning at 0 88 21/94 32 12 24.

First registration:

District - Tuesday, 7.40 p.m. Marc Lehmann receives the first order by email. Since then, one after the other has come. The Red Cross experiences a rush for the masks that it produces with 50 volunteer seamstresses. "People order around the clock, only between 0:00 and 4:00 in the morning something drips," says the 35-year-old, who coordinates the production. The corona hotline of the volunteer center "Let's go" was no longer standing still, which is why a new number was set up (see end). The helpers answered 60 calls in the first hour.

2000 orders for around 15,000 masks

By Thursday evening, the BRK had received over 2,000 orders for around 15,000 self-made masks. "The demand is so great that we cannot meet it right away," says Lehmann. Therefore, every household first receives a package with three free masks. Some had ordered 15 masks and more, they have to be patient. They were informed of this in a newsletter.

Since Thursday morning, volunteer BRK helpers have been delivering the masks. Now the team will try to make significantly more masks, says Lehmann. "So that there are at least a few in every household."

Mask orders

are now only possible via the website of the district office and the BRK www.coronagap.de. From Tuesday, a new telephone hotline is available on weekdays between 9 a.m. and 12 p.m. on 0 88 21/94 32 12 24.
