Mobilization around plotting applications

2020-04-20T18:28:45.131Z

Europe, and particularly France, is far from having welcomed the solution proposed by Apple and Google with open arms.

The hazards of the calendar are sometimes strange. The European Commissioner for the Internal Market, Thierry Breton, will meet Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple, according to the Politico website. Bluetooth tracking applications should be on the discussion menu. At the same time, a joint declaration by scientists and researchers is circulating that Le Figaro has obtained it. After measuring the privacy risks posed by tracking apps, they "applaud the initiative of Apple and Google." The two American giants announced in early April that they were joining forces to develop a solution allowing the implementation of these applications, while "preserving privacy and personal data" of their users.

If the approach is commendable, it nevertheless raises a few questions. Europe, and especially France, is far from having welcomed the solution of the two Americans with open arms. Thierry Breton is a fervent defender of digital independence and sees the idea that Europe relies on the Americans to manage a key element of its exit from containment. It is indeed Apple and Google who would keep control of the distribution of these applications.

It is not to be excluded that this is a lobbying action by American groups

A close friend of the government

The statement of these researchers is therefore very timely in the debate. "It is not to be excluded that this is a lobbying action by American groups," worries a government official. Google knows how to mobilize its community when necessary. He, for example, sounded the recall of youtubers in the context of discussions on copyright. This time, the developer community is stepping up to the plate.
