Railway transportation is one of the important infrastructures in Hong Kong. To foster students interested in the railway engineering industry, the School of Professional and Continuing Education (CPCE) of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and the MTR College (MTRA) under the MTR Corporation signed an MOU, The PolyU SPEED under the jurisdiction of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and MTRA will work together to provide various education and training courses and projects to develop railway engineering expertise.

The memorandum of cooperation was signed by Mr. Liang Yaohui, Dean of MTRA, and Prof. Ruan Bowen, Dean of CPCE. The two parties will cooperate in the two areas of education and the way of progression. MTRA will consider appointing experts as guest lecturers and graduation project instructors for full-time and part-time courses of electrical engineering (Honours) engineering or mechanical engineering (Honours) engineering of PolyU SPEED, or joint seminars and workshops And lectures, and continue to discuss providing more industrial training support for students, such as field visits and internships. In terms of pathways for further studies, MTRA graduates of the Higher Diploma in Railway Engineering can apply to PolyU SPEED's Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) Engineering or Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering (Honours) Engineering full-time and part-time programs.

According to Dr. Kahangamage, the cooperation memorandum aims to establish a framework for the future training cooperation between CPCE and MTRA.

Dr. Udaya Kahangamage, Coordinator of PolyU SPEED Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Mechanical Engineering, pointed out that the three-year memorandum of cooperation aims to establish a framework to promote cooperation between CPCE and MTRA in education and training programs. In the long run, the two colleges hope to make good use of the strengths of both parties to improve the quality of the courses, develop railway engineering expertise, and jointly cultivate the talents needed by the industry.

The demand for infrastructure talents in China and Hong Kong is very high in the future

Dr. Kahangamage pointed out that there will be more infrastructure projects in Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area in the future, including energy and industrial automation related projects. In addition, current and potential problems caused by industrial development, such as pollution, waste management, and transportation, are also urgently needed to be solved by engineers. Therefore, Hong Kong needs a large number of young professionals with engineering qualifications. Dean Liang Yaohui of the MTR Academy said that in Hong Kong, the MTR Corporation ’s Railway 2.0 project will further expand the MTR network and enhance customer service experience, serve more passengers, and demand for talent will be even more intense. Outside Hong Kong, with the country's implementation of the Belt and Road Initiative and the development of the Greater Bay Area, the need for rail transportation will be very great, bringing a lot of opportunities for railway professionals. In addition to the large number of engineering personnel required during construction, railway operations also require talents in various fields, such as maintenance, vehicle service, and customer service.

Liang Yaohui pointed out that MTR will need more talents in the future.

Graduates have a broad way out

Dr. Kahangamage added that students of the Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering (Honours) program can choose three majors: aerospace engineering, engineering design and automation engineering, or mechanical service and environmental engineering. Graduates can take up positions in different technical fields according to their expertise, such as general mechanical engineering, heavy mechanical engineering, and product research and development.

Course graduates have a wide range of outlets.
