(CNN Spanish) - The theological Commission of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints unanimously approved a miracle attributed to José Gregorio Hernández, as reported by Venezuela Cardinal Baltazar Porras, archbishop of Mérida and administrator of the Archdiocese of Caracas, who said who received a communication from that congregation. Already in January the Medical Commission had approved the religious requirement.

Silvia Correale, postulator of the cause of beatification of Hernández, confirmed to CNN that her case received the positive opinion of the Theological Commission. Now two steps are missing: the approval of the cardinals and bishops and that of Pope Francis. Correale calculates that they could occur before summer in the northern hemisphere, but the dates have not yet been decided.

CNN contacted the Vatican for more details and has yet to receive a response.

José Gregorio Hernández was born on October 26, 1864 in the town of Isnotú, in the state of Trujillo, in Venezuela. He studied medicine and, without devoting himself completely to religious life, was a devout Catholic from an early age. He is known as "the doctor of the poor", because he was at the service of those most in need.

Hernández passed away in Caracas in 1919 and since then has been revered by numerous believers, mainly in Latin America, who attribute the cure of various diseases.

The cause to take José Gregorio Hernández to the altars dates from 1949. In 1986, Pope John Paul II declared that Dr. José Gregorio Hernández was venerable.

It fills me with immense joy and joy that the Vatican Theological Commission unanimously approved one of the Miracles of our Saint, Dr. José Gregorio Hernández. This historical event is a great step towards the beatification of the doctor of all Venezuelans. Amen! pic.twitter.com/3PmPG9yvkS
