Allpress was born in Dunedin in 1930 and grew up on the South Island of New Zealand. At the beginning of his career, Allpress played in New Zealand soap operas, so his popularity was initially limited to Oceania. Through a role in "The Lord of the Rings" he became known to a wider audience.
