BRUSSELS - Brussels has launched an infringement procedure against Poland for the "law approved on February 14 that brings changes to the functioning of the judicial system , with the serious risk of political control of the system". The announcement was made by the vice-president of the EU executive, Vera Jurova. "The virus cannot kill democracy," said Jurova, inviting Warsaw to "address concerns" over the rule of law of the EU Commission. Poland has two months to respond.

Member States can reform their justice system, but they must do so without violating EU treaties, "says Jurova. The vice president also explained that she is" monitoring the situation carefully in all member states ", and in particular in Hungary. "20 people have adopted a state of emergency to deal with the crisis - he explains -. We recognize that an exceptional situation requires exceptional solutions, but this does not mean that the constitution and Parliament must be shut down and journalists silenced ".
